Embracing a Holistic Lifestyle: Transformative Behavior Change for a Healthier You
In today’s fast-paced world, we’re often pulled in many directions—juggling work, family, personal goals, and a multitude of responsibilities. It’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters: maintaining a balanced life. To truly thrive, we must nurture our mind, body, and spirit in a way that supports holistic well-being. But how can we start to create lasting change in our lives?
Many of us focus on one aspect of our wellness - diet or exercise. Both are important but they are only 2 legs of a holistic, three-legged stool. The other component, and in my biased opinion probably the most important, is mindfulness. Perception is the prism through which we experience the world. If we are more self-aware, we can more objectively notice what is coloring the prism of our perceptions. Understanding our self-talk in the moment can influence our diet, exercise, and mental state. It’s all interconnected. When we approach well-being as an interconnected system—where our physical health, mental clarity, and emotional balance all influence each other—we create a foundation for sustainable transformation.
What is Holistic Wellness?
Holistic wellness is about more than just checking off to-do lists or following trends. It’s about understanding that our health is a complex, interconnected web where our physical, mental, and emotional well-being all play crucial roles. True wellness goes beyond exercise and nutrition—it’s about finding harmony across all aspects of life.
As Dr. Andrew Weil, a pioneer in integrative medicine, says: "The best way to improve your health and happiness is through holistic practices that address not just the body but also the mind and spirit." This approach to wellness doesn’t just focus on one area of health; it looks at the whole person and their unique needs.
To live a holistic lifestyle means to:
Recognize the connections between our thoughts, emotions, and physical health.
Cultivate self-awareness and mindfulness to stay grounded in the present.
Focus on sustainable changes, adopting habits that support long-term well-being.
When we care for ourselves in a holistic way, we can experience more energy, clarity, and peace—both in our personal lives and in our work.
Behavior Change: Small Shifts, Big Impact
Making lasting behavior changes can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to be all or nothing. It’s about being consistently good vs occasionally perfect. Small, consistent adjustments can lead to profound shifts over time. Here are a few holistic practices that can help you transform your daily life:
Mindfulness and Meditation: By creating space to pause and check in with ourselves, we can cultivate deeper awareness of our thoughts and emotions. Making it a habit to do this throughout the day increases our overall self-awareness. I find controlled breathwork/pranayam, as a simple and effective way to bring me back to the present moment. Guided meditations build on mindfulness and allow us to go deeper in our own self-exploration, clear mental clutter and build resilience. Practice both with me on my YouTube Channel.
Yoga and Movement: Yoga is not just about physical poses; it’s a practice that connects us with our bodies and helps release tension. The physical movements, or asanas, in Kundalini Yoga, are designed to stimulate the body's energy flow and release tension. Each class targets specific meridians and thereby can support the rebalancing of a particular aspect of you. It may be your kidneys/fear, your heart and lungs, or your spine/flexibility. This can have a direct impact on your emotional well-being, as stored emotions (unprocessed energy/trauma) often manifest as physical tension in the body. Kundalini Yoga postures coupled with allowing the breath to flow freely, can support you in releasing emotional energy and creating a more balanced state within themselves. Check out my free classes on my YouTube Channel.
Sound Meditation: Healing with sound, such as through gong baths or other sound therapies, helps support our nervouse systems, reset our energy and supports deep relaxation. Sound can serve as a powerful tool for releasing stress and recharging our system. It offers us the opportunity to “get out of our heads” and thereby shift beliefs and gives us the opportunity to see things from a different perspective.
Supporting Your Holistic Journey: Integrating Wellness into Your Routine
Whether you're exploring wellness for personal growth or looking to bring more mindful practices into your workplace, the key to successful behavior change is finding what works for you. I encourage my clients to pick one new skill, such as a pranayam/controlled breath, and to work with it for several days, even weeks if needed. Integrating just one new practice on a regular basis builds an association between the experience, the anxiety, and the pranayam, the relief. So when in the future you find yourself in a situation where you need that relief or rebalancing, you don’t have to think about it. You know how to take care of yourself by applying that practice.
Incorporating practices like mindfulness, yoga and sound meditation into your wellness routine can help you reset, recharge, and feel more aligned with your true self. A 3 minute meditation can reset your nervous system. Imagine that.
Building a Balanced Life in the Workplace
For those working in high-stress environments, holistic wellness practices can also play a crucial role in improving productivity and emotional well-being. Integrating simple, accessible practices into the workday—such as mindful breaks, belly laughing, or opposite nostril breathing can help employees reset and maintain their focus throughout the day.
As Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post and advocate for workplace wellness, reminds us:
“It’s not about time management, it’s about energy management.” When we prioritize energy and well-being, both at work and in life, we create a more productive, creative, and engaged environment.
By supporting holistic well-being, companies can foster a culture of balance, improving overall employee satisfaction and reducing burnout. Small changes can lead to a healthier, more engaged workforce, and it’s exciting to see more companies embracing wellness initiatives that benefit both the individual and the organization as a whole.
Start Small, Build Gradually
If you’re considering making a shift toward a more holistic lifestyle, start with small changes that resonate with you. New habits can take from a few weeks to several months to build. There’s no rush—progress is personal and can look different for everyone. By adopting practices that nourish your mind, body, and spirit, you’re building a foundation for long-term well-being.
